What Makes a Casino Great?

The world’s best casinos offer more than just games of chance. They provide top entertainment, luxury hotels and spas, and fine dining. They also feature amazing architecture and incredible design. But what makes a great casino?

Gambling in some form has existed in almost every society throughout history, from ancient Mesopotamia to Elizabethan England to Napoleon’s France and beyond. During much of this time, however, gambling was illegal in most places. It was only in the twentieth century that the industry began to grow as Nevada and other states passed laws to permit casinos and expand their operations.

While most people think of Las Vegas when they think of casinos, they can be found throughout the world. Generally, they are large, smoke-filled buildings with a variety of gambling activities. Most offer table games like blackjack, roulette, and poker. Some have slot machines as well. Regardless of the game, the house always has an advantage over the players; this is known as the house edge or expected value. Casinos earn money by charging a commission, or rake, on some games and by giving out complimentary items to gamblers, called comps.

Because of the large amounts of money handled within a casino, both patrons and staff may be tempted to cheat or steal. This is why most casinos have security measures in place to prevent this from occurring. These can include surveillance cameras, which monitor all areas of the casino. In addition, some casinos employ a high number of security guards to patrol the premises.
